Our local hospital is looking for volunteers to rock babies in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Rocking has been shown to help soothe and comfort premature and sick infants. As a volunteer, you can make a tremendous difference for these tiny patients.
No prior experience is necessary. The hospital will provide a brief orientation and training on infant safe-handling and the NICU environment. You do need to pass a background check.
We ask volunteers to commit to at least one 3-hour shift per week. Shifts are available daily from 9am to noon and 1pm to 4pm.
As a rocker, your main role will be gently rocking babies in isolettes or cradles. You may also help soothe infants by speaking or singing softly. Hospital staff will guide you on how best to comfort and care for each baby.
Not at all. We understand stretches of rocking can get tiring. Volunteers are welcome to take breaks whenever needed. You can also help the nurses with other small tasks like fetching supplies when not rocking.
Premature infants receiving regular skin-to-skin contact and soothing have been found to gain weight faster and leave the hospital sooner. Your gentle rocking can seriously improve outcomes for these tiny patients starting life in the NICU.
