Videostroboscopy is a procedure that evaluates how your vocal cords and voice box (larynx) are moving and functioning. During videostroboscopy, an endoscope or small camera is placed through the mouth or nose to directly view the vocal cords as the patient speaks or sings. A stroboscope light is used to flash on and off, allowing the doctor to see the vocal cords in slow motion. This helps identify any problems with vibration, closure or symmetry of movement of the vocal cords.
Videostroboscopy can help diagnose conditions that affect vocal cord function such as vocal cord paralysis, vocal cord dysfunction, vocal cord lesions or masses, laryngeal web, laryngopharyngeal reflux and voice disorders.
The procedure involves shining a stroboscopic light through the laryngoscope inserted through the mouth or nose. This allows the doctor to see the vocal cords in slow motion during phonation. No anesthesia is required. The exam takes around 10-15 minutes.
Videostroboscopy is generally not painful. Some minor discomfort may be experienced when the laryngoscope is placed through the nose but it is brief and tolerable for most patients. The procedure itself does not cause any pain.
The videostroboscopy results help the doctor evaluate the structure, symmetry and movement pattern of vocal cords. Abnormal findings help diagnose the specific voice or throat condition. The results also help determine the best treatment approach like voice therapy, medication or surgery.
Videostroboscopy is usually performed by an otolaryngologist (ENT doctor) or a speech language pathologist trained to conduct fiberoptic laryngeal examination and interpret stroboscopic findings. It is most often performed in the doctor's clinic or at an ear, nose and throat facility.
