Smogging is an inspection program to test vehicle emissions and identify vehicles that exceed allowable emission limits. Many areas require vehicles to pass a smog check/test in order to renew vehicle registration.
The main purpose of smog checks is to identify vehicles that emit higher than acceptable levels of pollutants such as carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides. Identifying these high emitting vehicles helps reduce air pollution and protect the environment and public health.
The frequency of required smog checks depends on the vehicle's model year, location, and test results. In most areas, vehicles under 6 years old need testing every two years, while vehicles 6 years or older need testing annually.
Smog check stations are located throughout the state and are authorized by the Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR). You can search for smog check stations near you on the BAR website or mobile app.
If a vehicle fails the initial smog test, repairs must be made to fix the cause of failure. The vehicle can then be retested at no additional charge. If it continues to fail after repairs, more repairs may be needed before passing inspection.
