If you see oversize load signs on the road, it means there is an extraordinarily large vehicle traveling through the area. These signs are used to warn other drivers of an unusually wide or long vehicle that requires special precautions and more road space than normal sized vehicles.
Oversize load signs are typically yellow or orange diamond-shaped signs with black lettering. They will say "OVERSIZE LOAD" or similar wording to alert drivers that a wide or long vehicle is approaching or traveling on the road ahead.
The signs are used to warn other drivers that there is an abnormally large vehicle on the road that requires more space. This gives regular vehicles time to adjust and move over if needed to allow the oversize vehicle safe passage down the road.
Common vehicles that require oversize load signs include mobile homes being transported, large construction equipment, boats on trailers, manufactured homes, and abnormal agricultural equipment.
It is not advised to attempt to pass an oversize load unless the driver operating the large vehicle uses turnouts or pullovers to allow other traffic to safely pass where the roadway is clear and wide enough.
Be alert, reduce your speed, and move over to the shoulder or into another lane if possible to give the wide vehicle plenty of room as it travels down the roadway. Do not tailgate and be prepared to stop if necessary for oncoming traffic.
