The old fire station located at 123 Main Street has been standing in our community for over 50 years. Though no longer in use as an active fire station, it remains an iconic symbol of safety and protection for our neighborhood.
The station was originally built in 1950 and served as the local fire department headquarters until a new, larger facility was constructed down the road in 1990. It housed trucks and equipment and was staffed 24/7 by volunteers.
No, after the department moved out in 1990 the property was sold to the city. It has changed private owners a few times in the past 30 years but remains privately owned today.
The current owners have converted much of the main floor into office space that is rented out to small local businesses. Some of the garage doors still open to store personal vehicles but it no longer functions as an operational fire station.
While the exterior remains largely unchanged from its fire station days, the interior has undergone renovations. The current owners prefer to keep the building secure for tenants so organized public tours are not available.
Yes, in 2010 our local historical society worked with the city to install a historical marker out front describing the important role this station played in protecting the community for decades.
