Located just outside of the city is an abandoned maximum security prison that was shut down in the early 2000s. Ever since, it has sat empty and is known as a popular spot for urban explorers. Here are some frequently asked questions about this abandoned prison.
The prison was used to house some of the most dangerous criminals in the state. It held over 1000 inmates at its peak and was known for its high security features like guard towers, razor wire fences and isolated cell blocks.
Over the years, the prison's operating costs became too high to maintain. There were also issues with overcrowding and deteriorating infrastructure that made it difficult and expensive to run safely. It was finally shut down in 2002.
While the abandoned buildings themselves are stable, exploring the prison is still not recommended as it is considered trespassing on private property. There are no guards or officials on site so it can be risky to enter certain areas alone.
Parts of the 20 foot outer concrete walls and guard towers still stand impressively. Inside some cell blocks, bars and doors are intact along with other recognizable features like the cafeteria, exercise yard and admin buildings.
The prison can be viewed from the perimeter road but there is no public access inside for safety and legal reasons. Photos online give a glimpse of what remains of this crumbling and now unsettlingly quiet former maximum security facility.
